Language and people

The name Mirgan is referred to both the language and community. Racially they are of Indo-Aryan descent. The Mirgan community has been declared a General Caste by the Indian government. The Mirgan people are a small ethnic group in India. This people mainly reside in state of Chhattisgarh and Odisha. Historically, the Mirgan people are known for their skills in weaving and clothe production, specializing in black and red cloth particularly in the traditional handloom industry. Their community has long been associated with creating fine fabrics, and they have passed down their craftsmanship skills through generations.

The Mirgan community of Kotpad is famous for their exquisite organic dyed textile. The natural dye is manufactured from the bark of aul tree grown in this area. However, manufactured material is replacing their traditional cloth. Therefore, many Mirgan people left their traditional weaving profession and started working in fields.
