Mirgan Festival

Diari festival

In the months of December–January, our people celebrate the Diari festival with great joy. On the first day, cowherds go from house to house carrying musical instruments like drums and trumpets, and tie a thread called Geta around the necks of cows and bulls. During this festival, our people happily bathe their cows, bulls, buffaloes, sheep, and goats. After bathing them, they are let out to graze so that the animals do not wander far.
The villagers also bathe and get ready. Later, they bring the cows, bulls, buffaloes, sheep, and goats back home from the grazing grounds and tie them in their places. Khichdi and rotis are prepared for the animals to eat. Along with these foods, different kinds of sweets are also made. The elders of the household and children joyfully feed the animals. Afterward, everyone sits together and enjoys the food prepared at home.

The celebration continues on the second day as well, which is called Gordhan. The Gordhan program takes place on Sunday evening. During this time, cowherds dance and sing while carrying musical instruments, trumpets, and symbols of gods and goddesses, and thus the Gordhan celebration begins. A pair of bulls is also brought there.
During Gordhan, the women of the village bring rice (paddy) in baskets from their homes and give it to their respective cowherds. The cowherds take a small portion of the rice from each basket and feed it to the bulls, and keep the remaining rice in their own baskets. After this, the Diari festival and the Gordhan program come to an end.
